Guide to Local Rents
Each year the Housing Corporation publishes data in The Guide to Local Rents Parts I, II and III which provide comprehensive data on the pattern of average rents in the social housing sector in England.
- Part I compares general needs rents across tenures;
- Part II compares general needs rents for the RSL sector; and
- Part III compares supported housing and housing for older people rents.
The Guide to Local Rents is produced on behalf of the Housing Corporation by Dataspring, based in the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research, University of Cambridge.

Part I of the 2007 Rent Guide is now available. This is a cross-tenure comparison of rents by local authority area in the RSL, LA and private sectors, using data from the RSR and CORE surveys, CLG and the Rents Service. Indicative weekly costs for owner-occupiers in each local authority area are also provided for comparison.
Part II of the 2007 Rent Guide provides detailed analysis of the housing association sector covers registered social landlord rents based on data at 31 March 2007 obtained from the long RSR survey. It consists of three tables, giving total stock levels, average rent and service charges broken down by bedsize for:
- Each region within England, and a national total;
- each RSL; and
- each local authority area, broken down among all RSLs that own stock there.
The Guide for 2007 differs from previous years in that, for the first time the analysis includes 5 and 6+ bedroom sizes. In addition the threshold for associations required to complete the long RSR has been raised from 250 units to 1,000. These changes means that care should be taken when comparing trend data over time.
Part III of the 2007 Rent Guide provides detailed analysis of the supported housing and housing for older people sector and covers registered social landlord supported housing rents based on data at 31 March 2007 obtained from the long RSR survey. It consists of three tables, giving a combination of rents data for:
- Total stock levels, average net and gross rents and service charges broken down by bedsize for each region within England, and a national total (Table C1);
- gross average rents broken down by bedsize for each RSL (Table C2);
- total stock levels, average net and gross rents and service charges broken down by bedsize for each RSL by Local Authority area for each region within England (Table C3).
The Guide for 2007 differs from previous years in that the threshold for associations required to complete the long RSR has been raised from 250 units to 1,000. This change means that care should be taken when comparing trend data over time.
