A group of women Chief Executives met during 2002-3 with the then Chairman of the Housing Corporation, Baroness Brenda Dean, to discuss how to increase the number of women in leadership roles within the housing association sector. The result is Leadership 2010, an action plan to improve diversity in the sector's leadership. Although the main focus was on women, the action plan for Leadership 2010 will encompass all diversity issues. Not all the initiatives to increase the number of black and minority ethnic (B&ME) leaders are described here, but the aim is that Leadership 2010 will become the unifying focus for all such work. This is not just about improving performance on diversity; it is vital that the sector acts now to ensure the leadership needed for the 21st century.
