James Parker and Dave Bufton
James Parker and Dave Bufton are grateful that housing associations do more than merely provide homes. They were unemployed until Nexus Housing gave them a chance to get paid work experience on its Newnham Bridge development, near Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire.
Twenty-year-old James, pictured left, and David, 17, are spending six months gaining know-how on different aspects of the building trade, such as bricklaying, carpentry and plastering.
“This scheme has really helped me see where I want to go,” James says. “I am sure now I want to concentrate on plumbing and want to go to college in September to get my qualifications.”
The scheme was set up specifically for out-of-work young people in rural communities, who often miss out on experience because of difficulties with transport and a lack of local opportunities.
Nexus Housing set up the project after talks with Worcestershire Youth Services, the Rural Housing Enabler, Malvern Hills District Council and Thomas Vale Construction. Eight homes are being built for rent and seven for shared ownership.
