Debbie Curtis

Feeling safe and secure was top priority for Debbie Curtis as she prepared for the big leap to living on her own for the first time. She’s bought her new apartment in Solihull under a pioneering shared ownership scheme that helps people with learning disabilities choose just like any other first-time buyer.

Bromford Housing Group’s HOLD scheme, short for Home Ownership for Long-term Disabilities, was developed to ensure that people in Debbie’s situation can regard choice as a right, not a privilege.

The association has come up with a financing package for a 50:50 owning/renting split, with both halves covered by benefits. The scheme works by granting the owner a long lease covered by an interest-only mortgage. Only when the home is sold is the capital repaid. The lease covers full repairs, so residents know they won’t face extra bills or have to find tradespeople.

Debbie receives a floating support service that helps her with tasks such as managing her finances.

Debbie’s parents, Dorothy and Reg, have seen a real difference in her. “The independence this has given to Deborah has been remarkable,” says Dorothy. “She now invites friends to come and visit and does not need us around all the time. The location is ideal, with a good bus service on hand.”
