Design focus - Brooklands Avenue, Cambridge
Brooklands Avenue, in central Cambridge, has won praise from the housing industry and residents alike. The scheme received a Gold Building for Life Standard from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) and is proving popular with local people.
The scheme is built on land previously owned by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and comprises 378 homes – 113 of which are affordable homes, offered by Wherry Housing Association, one of the Circle Anglia group. It offers a range of homes, including one-bedroom flats and maisonettes, and two and three-bedroom houses.
The development’s proximity to open spaces, slow-speed streets and communal play areas have made it ideal for local families.
Residents says they love their new homes. Tim and Alison moved in last year with their two children, eight-year-old Harry and three-year-old Olivia. “Our new home is really spacious,” says Tim Seru, who moved in last year with his wife and two children. “We’re very pleased with it and with the atmosphere of the neighbourhood.”
