Design focus - Oaklands Court, London
Catalyst Housing Group has transformed a site that had been derelict for over 20 years into 45 affordable homes in Shepherd’s Bush, west London.
Eighty percent of the homes on the scheme are family homes, with generous private gardens and substantial balconies. They all have dual east-west aspects, and receive sunlight for part of the day.
There’s also a small children’s playground and a landscaped communal roof garden, with benches for residents and plants that attract wildlife, which takes up 60% of the roof.
Working with architects Monahan Blythen, Catalyst set out to create a bold design. It incorporated timber cladding, coloured render and aluminium and copper roofs into the scheme to make it visually appealing. High-quality sound proofing has also been built into the scheme, and exceeds building regulations by over 20%.
Residents are really pleased with their new homes. The kitchens, in particular, have proved popular. “My kitchen’s stunning,” says one resident. “The kitchen’s very spacious,” says another.
